Il resoconto dell’assemblea è reperibile in rete, nell’archivio: The strait Times, 16 september 1974, page 28: “AFC Bars Israel from all it’s competition.

1971: when the Al Shorta supported the liberation of Palestine by renouncing continental glory

With Israel’s renewed atrocious repression against Palestine, and the outrage this has sparked in the football world as well, we want to recall a great gesture of solidarity made by the Iraqi Al Shorta team, who in 1971 refused to play in the continental final against an Israeli team in the name of Palestine.

1971: The Great Refusal of Al-Shorta

On 2 April 1971 in Bankok, Thailand, the final of the fourth edition of the Asian Champions Cup, now the AFC Champions League, was to be played between Al-Shorta of Iraq and Maccabi Tel Haviv of Israel. That match would never be played due to the Arab team’s refusal to play against Israel’s representatives for political reasons: due to the illegitimate occupation of Palestinian territories and the ongoing war between Israel and the surrounding Arab world.

The continental competition comprised only eight teams in the final phase and was played entirely in Thailand over two weeks. The champions of their respective leagues were divided into two groups of four and in Group B, Al Shorta was drawn with Maccabi. This was the first time the Iraqis refused to play against the champions of Israel, but despite the forfeit, they managed to get through the round following victories against the hosts Bankok Bank and the Indian police team.

In the semi-finals, Maccabi defeated the Korean Armed Forces 2-0, while Al-Shorta defeated the defending champions Taj Theran (now Esteghlal). That match marked the end of the event, as Al-Shorta subsequently preferred to support the Palestinian cause rather than play with the Israelis. On 2 April, Al-Shorta players took to the pitch in Bankok waving the Israeli flag in protest against Israeli repression.

The continental final was not to be played and the AFC, the Asian confederation, declared Maccabi Tel Haviv the continental champion. However, the Iraqi media and public did not share this view, celebrating Al Shorta’s success in the continental arena in the press and even holding a celebratory bus parade on the team’s return to Baghdad.

The following year the Asian Champions Cup, which was to be played in Iran, was not held, as the champions of Lebanon and Kuwait refused to play in their group against Maccabi Netanya. A few years later, Israel would be expelled from the Asian Confederation.

1974: Israel expelled from the AFC

1974 saw the first major change in the AFC with the exclusion of Israel from the federation. The report of the meeting can be found on the web, in the archive: The strait Times, 16 september 1974, page 28: “AFC Bars Israel from all it’s competition”.

“Last night the AFC decided to bar Israel from all its competitions and to admit China. The promoters of this initiative were the Arab states, in particular Kuwait and Iran”. The Israeli state had in fact been at war with the surrounding Arab world for eighteen years, culminating in the Suez Canal crisis. ‘Federal President Abdul Rhama, after seven hours of debate, despite the decision-making power he holds, went along with what the majority of the congress expressed.

As for Israel, the congress ruling reads: “The country will not be invited to AFC tournaments organised by member states and will not be given any permission to organise AFC tournaments. The president kept to the following vote: 17 members in favour, 13 against and 6 abstained. The Iranian delegate then clarified that the decision will not affect the smooth running of the Asian Games final the next day, which will be played between Iran and Israel. Nor will it affect Israel’s participation in the Asian Games, where it is entitled to participate as a member of the Asian Games Federation, or in the Olympic Games or the FIFA World Cup. The exclusion will only apply in those competitions that are based on an invitation system.”

The day after the AFC ruling, Israel’s last game in the Asian context took place, with the final of the Asian Games, lost to Iran. This was a completely false competition, as both North Korea and Kuwait had refused to play against Israel in the group stage, thus losing by default. The final, which took place in front of 100,000 people in Tehran, saw the hosts win by a narrow margin thanks to Shum’s own goal.
